Chesapeake-Virginia Beach Alumnae
Deltas Host Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration
Chesapeake, VA –The Chesapeake-Virginia Beach Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recently hosted “A Pre-Kwanzaa Experience: Come Celebrate as One” at the Indian River Middle School in Chesapeake.
The program featured presentations by Delta Academy and Delta Gems participants, who shared information about the seven principles, greetings, colors and decorations, symbols, feast, and gifts of Kwanzaa. Developed by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, the holiday introduces and reinforces seven basic values of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing family, community and culture. Kwanzaa is celebrated annually December 26 through January 1.
The chapter’s Programs/Projects and Arts & Letters committees presented the program in support of its five-point thrust, which includes educational development. Sondra Kendrick and Audra Hyman are co-chairs of the Programs/Projects Committee and Donna Graham Elliott is chair of the Arts & Letters Committee for the Chesapeake Virginia Beach Chapter, whose president is Mary Williams.
