Virginia Beach Deltas Introduce Six During Jabberwock

The Virginia Beach Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, sponsors its Jabberwock biennially during even numbered years. This year’s gala was held on April 5, 2008 at the Landstown High School in Virginia Beach with the debut of six young ladies into society.
The chapter selects young ladies within the Hampton Roads area for the express purpose of fostering positive relationships, encouraging leadership and scholarship, and promoting finer womanhood. Fundraising proceeds are used to assist the educational endeavors of our contestants, for scholarship and for community service projects.
The nearly year long process culminates the evening of the Jabberwock pageant with the young ladies making their debut into society, and with the crowning of Miss Jabberwock.

historical roots in the immortal classic, Alice In Wonderland,
In this book, author Lewis Carroll created the character known as the Jabberwocky. As the story unfolds, each year the Jabberwocky summoned all the creatures of his kingdom to put on a show or gala event.
In 1925, Marion Hope Conover of Boston, Massachusetts, a member of the Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, conceived the idea of sponsoring a variety show of music, skits, and dance. She combined cultural expressions and talent with fundraising for the purpose of promoting scholarship. As a result of this successful venture, Delta’s Jabberwock was born. Jabberwock was formally adopted and copyrighted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on December 28, 1947.
Sixty-one years later, Delta chapters all over the world are still embracing this traditional program.
