NN SCLC Plans Event For Dr. King Commemoration

      The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the Southeast Community Day Planning Committee of Newport News are hosting a Commemorative Event in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza. The Plaza is located on Jefferson Avenue at the Dr. Martin Luther King Way intersection. The public is invited to join the “March In Memory of Dr. King” processional immediately after the Opening Ceremonies. 
       Dr. King served as President of the National SCLC from its founding in 1957 until he was assassinated 40 years ago on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. 
   The New Generation Marching Drum Corp of Portsmouth will provide a musical tribute in honor of Dr. King.  The “I Have A Dream Speech” will be given by Timothy Parker, and

    reflections of Dr. King will be shared by members of the community.
      Joe S. Frank, Mayor of Newport News, will be the Keynote Speaker during the Opening Ceremonies. After the tributes and reflections, New Generation Marching Drum Corp, along with local SCLC leaders, members of the clergy and elected officials plan to march from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza to the Moton Community House to commemorate the assassination and support the vision of King’s “Poor People’s Campaign of 1968.”
