Local AKAs Join In Historic Walk To Highlight Fitness
On Saturday, June 28th, over 50,000 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha will participate in a synchronized walk for Emotional, Spiritual, and Physical Health. Members of the sorority will link hands and step off at the same time worldwide to raise awareness about the importance of fitness. Over 900 chapters from each of the sorority’s geographic regions, as well as members in Canada, Germany, the Virgin Islands and the Bahamas, will participate in this historic walk.
To commemorate the Sorority’s founding year-1908- the members and their families will walk a symbolic 1,908 steps (approximately 2 miles). The Emotional, Spiritual, and Physical Centennial Walk incorporates the ESP theme of International President Barbara A. McKinzie.
The Hampton Roads Southside chapters’ Centennial Walk is sponsored locally by Gamma Delta Omega (Portsmouth), Iota Omega (Norfolk), Lambda Gamma Omega (Virginia Beach), Omicron Pi Omega (Chesapeake), and Upsilon Omicron Omega (Norfolk). The chapters are also inviting other Greek fraternities and sororities to participate and wear their organizations colors. Family and friends are also encouraged to participate in the walk, symbolizing a community commitment to improving health and fitness.
“What better way to mark our sorority’s centennial than to make a commitment to health and fitness,” says Mona Gunn, president, Upsilon Omicron Omega Chapter. “Alpha Kappa Alpha has been actively involved in improving the lives of people in our respective communities and around the world for 100 years. Now, we’re taking steps to ensure that we take care of our own emotional, spiritual and physical health.”
This ESP Centennial Walk will take place at the Booker T. Washington High School track in Norfolk on the corner of Princess Anne and Park Avenues. To begin the walk, all participants will face in the direction of Washington, DC where Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Centennial Convention takes place next month. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., and the walk begins at 11:00 a.m. Individuals and families are invited to join Alpha Kappa Alpha on the way to better health and fitness.
