Longest Serving Commissioner To Be Honored In N.C.
Samuel Kenneth Shaw, Sr., who will be 90-years-old June 1, 2008, will be honored on Saturday, May 31, 2008, at 4:00 p.m. at the National Guard Armory in Elizabeth City, N.C.
The first black County Commissioner ever to be elected in Camden County, N.C., he became the first Commissioner ever to serve 26 consecutive years on that board. Each time he ran for office, he won the election. He decided not to run again in 2004 due to the illness of his wife who died in 2006. They had been married for 65 years.
Mr. Shaw continues to serve on two boards in Elizabeth City that he began serving while a member of the Commissioner Board in Camden. During his tenure on the Commissioner Board, he was responsible for the creation of the Camden Medical Park that didn't cost the County any money because he was able to tap into other resources for the funding of this project.
