NSU Will Honor Alumni, Faculty At Inaugural Event

 

     The NSU President’s Gala, featuring the inaugural class of distinguished alumni awards, will be held Saturday, March 29 at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel located in downtown Norfolk. The event will also feature the Distinguished Faculty, the Academy of Distinguished Alumni and the Forever Upward awards.
   April Woodard, senior correspondent for Inside Edition and daughter of former NSU President Harrison B. Wilson, will serve as the emcee for the evening’s festivities. Woodard, an award-winning journalist, has covered a variety of news stories including an undercover investigation about living on the streets of Manhattan; a series of stories on a rare disease called hemangioma; and coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. .
    During the celebration, the following individuals will receive awards: Adrian L. Frederick will receive the 2008 Graduate Over the Last Decade (GOLD) Award. Frederick is a 2002 NSU graduate, who during his tenure as a student was a Parson scholar, student government association president, and a Ronald H. Brown Fellow at the Center for International Politics and Commercial Diplomacy.
    The Academy of Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves through their achievement and citizenship. Recipients in this category will receive a bronze medallion bearing the university’s seal with a matching chain and pendant.
Awardees in this category include Shelvee H. Osborne ‘79, for volunteerism, philanthropy, and service as president of the NSU Alumni Association; the Honorable Judge Raymond A. Jackson ‘73, for service as a military officer, attorney and federal judge; Dr. Keith Newby ‘86 for contributions to the well-being of the Hampton Roads community; and Melvin T. Stith ‘68 for scholarly contributions to the advancement of business and marketing education.

   The Distinguished Faculty Awards recognize Norfolk State University faculty who have distinguished themselves through their teaching, research and service. The recipients for 2008 include Sam-Shajing Sun, for establishing a world-class organic and polymeric optoelectronic materials and device research facility at NSU; Bennie Marshall, for introducing student support programs that have helped to increase the pass rates on the national nursing examinations; Milton Ferguson, for developing strategies that engage students in the learning process; and Philllp McNeil, for his ability to break down complex material in a manner which his students understand.   

   The final award category for the evening will be the Forever Upward Award, one of the most prestigious non-academic awards bestowed upon an individual or organization by the Office of the President.
Recipients are recognized for scholarly, humanitarian or philanthropic contributions to the university or the greater community. There are two recipients of the 2008 Forever Upward Award. First. TowneBank will be recognized for its commitment to the university’s major gifts campaign and for providing leadership and expertise to a host of organizations in the region.
The second Forever Upward Award recipient is M. Boyd Jones, who played a pivotal role in the Brown v. the Board of Education decision. He joined the faculty at NSU in 1963 and served the university until he retired in 1979. Jones passed away on Jan. 19, 2008.
    Entertainment will be provided by The Fuzz Band, an eight-member ensemble whose music is a blend of urban, rock and soul.
