New Library Program Encourages Newport News Teens
A new library program is helping teens in Newport News’ Southeast Community. The Pearl Bailey Library’s Emerging Teen Artists program highlights students’ talents in art, writing, singing, music, dance, crafts and more.
The first program in April featured an exhibit of 16 pieces of artwork by Chris Palmer, Enterprise Academy student, and Trent Sims, Menchville High School student.
Chris, 16, began creating his watercolor and pastel sketches of landscapes and abstracts earlier this year in the classroom of his English teacher, Martha Kolling, who said that she has a passion for art and that her students may pursue painting during breakfast and lunchtimes.
Trent, 15, uses pencil, pen and ink to create anime-style drawings, self portraits and a creative blending of modern-day issues and realism. He said that he has been creating art for about 11 years, but that he did not like to show his artwork until his friend Chris Palmer encouraged him to join the Emerging Teen Artists program.
Programs are planned for every other month and will include displays from 12-17-year-olds and a reception.
Teens who live in southeast Newport News, are 12-17 years old and are interested in displaying their talents, or those who work with teens, can speak with any member of the Pearl Bailey Library’s Family and Youth Services staff to apply for the program.
