Ruby Dee Hosted By Norfolk Deltas During Her Recent Visit To Area

   The Norfolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recently sponsored (on April 25. 2008) a welcoming reception for acclaimed actress and long-time honorary Delta, Ruby Dee. The elegant reception was held at the Portsmouth Renaissance Hotel prior to the annual Urban League Dinner where Ms. Dee was the featured artist.
   Other participating Delta chapters were the Chesapeake-Virginia Beach and Portsmouth Alumnae Chapters. The following persons served on the reception planning committee: Mrs. Sonya Smith, Reception Chair and Second Vice-President of Norfolk Alumnae Chapter; Dr. M. Lorraine Wynn Dancy, Reception (u-chair and Chair of Norfolk Alumnae Chapter’s Arts and Letters Committee; Mrs. Aurella Addison, Protocol Chair; and Mrs. Glynis Mason, President of Norfolk Alumnae Chapter.
   Ms. Dee is the widow of the late actor, Ossie Davis, and together the couple appeared in numerous theatrical productions, including “Jeb” and “Purlie Victorious”.

  Ms. Dee was awarded an Obie award for her performance in “Boesman and Lena” in 1971, and a Drama Desk award followed in 1973 for her work in the performance, “Wedding Band.” She recently received a Drama Critics award.
   During the reception violinist, Mr. James Coaxum, a Norfolk State University music major serenaded the honoree. Dr. Wanda Brockington, National Co-Chair of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Arts and Letters Commission gave welcoming remarks. The following members of the Norfolk Chapter’s Arts and Letters Committee served as hostesses: Mrs. Delores Brown, hostesses co-chair; Mrs. Connie Joyner, hostesses co-chair; Mrs. A. Diane Bacon, Mrs. Alice Ferguson, Mrs. Rosemary Fonville, Ms. Deborah Gary, Ms. Jean Jeffery, Mrs. Alberta Key, Mrs. Myrna Matthews, Mrs. Hortense Spence, Ms. Priscilla Scott Thomas, Mrs. Jean Walton and Dr. Evelyn Wigglesworth.
