Volunteer Award Honoree

By Evelyn Sears Peevy

The spacious Waterside Maniott Hotel was recently the scene of the 33rd Hampton Roads Volunteer Achievement Awards Program. When Joe Flanagan, WVEC TV commentator, took the podium it signaled to over 350 attendees that the program had begun.
Ms. Carol Williams Hundley, Hampton, was the first of five individual adult volunteer recipients. Ms. Hundley was surrounded by members of her fanuily, church, friends, and fraternal organizations: Order of Eastern Star, Order of the Golden Circle, Daughters of Isis, Order of Cyrenes, Heroines of Jericho and Ladies of Perfection. Most of her guest attendees were a totally pleasant surprise.
Her achievements included annual Thanksgiving meal preparation at her residence for over 40 persons. First with her mom, and upon her demise, she still maintains this tradition. Any person hungry, alone, with no means of enjoying this special day, is invited gratis. This has now spread to the Christmas holiday.
Carol has also been a caretaker for family, friends, and co-workers. When one calls upon her or when she learns of a distress or needed situation, she immediately becomes that special angel. This act includes Salvation Anny’s stuffing stockings, red kettle bell ringing and stocking the shelves (SOS) food drives. Monthly, she donates to the Disabled American Veterans and the Samaritan House drives.
Her participation with Morning Star Baptist Church outreach program include donations to the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree, coat and food drive. She holds office in several of her organizations.
Ms. Hundley is a retired postal supervisor, whose time, finance, cooking and love is shared with many in the community. She is the 43 year bride of George Hundley, mother of Shaton and grandmother to Shakia.
