Book Signing Planned To Highlight 1808 End Of Slave Trade
The United States Colored Troops Descendants (U.S.C.T.D.), a division of the Bells Mill Historical Research and Restoration Society, Inc. in Chesapeake, is hosting two book talks and signings by historian and author Dr. E. Curtis Alexander.
On Saturday April 26, 2008 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the book “DAUGHTERS AND SONS OF AFRO-UNION PATRIOT HEROES—Descendants Pictorial Reflections” will be featured. It is edited by Dr. Alexander with assistance from Sallie Cuffee Mercer. The event will be held at the historic Gabriel Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church located at 2216 Longridge Road in the Cuffeytown section of Chesapeake.
The book talk and signing will include participating descendants from the families of the following Patriot heroes: Corporal Lemuel Cuffey, Private Cornelius Smith, Sergeant March Corprew, Private Marshall Land, Private Benjamin Holley, Private Dallas Holley, 1st Class Boy Albert Holly, 2nd Class Boy David Mebane, Private Walter Smith, Colored Cook Wilson Nixon and Corporal Josiah Wilson.

On Sunday April 27, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Greenbriar Public Library 1212 Volvo Parkway in Chesapeake, Dr. Alexander will talk about and sign copies of his latest book entitled – “AFRICANS IN THE CIVIL WAR – Essays on their struggles, Defeats and Victories.” The book focuses on Afro-Union Patriot heroes from lower Tidewater, in particular, and heroes from other war-torn areas, in general.
Both events are in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the ending of the American Slave Trade and in celebration of the 143rd Anniversary of the end of the American Civil War.
