Will Host 6th Holiday
Food Drive Party
(Newport News) – North District Councilwoman Sharon P. Scott and the Food Drive Committee are gearing up for the sixth Annual North District Holiday Food Drive Party. It will take place at the recently upgraded Patrick Henry Mall on Jefferson Avenue, in Newport News on Saturday, December 15, 2007, from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Light of Hope Center will serve as a second official Food Drive site and will accept donations Saturday and Sunday, December 16 from 10 a.m until 4 p.m. Our other partners include Dominion Physical Therapy, WalMart, Office of Human Affairs, American Legion Post 368, City of Newport News, Denbigh Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, S&V, Inc., and Peninsula Food Bank.
To support the “Food Drive Party,” attendees are asked to bring non-perishable foods or make a monetary donation. Businesses and other entities can also support our efforts by conducting mini food drives and bringing the proceeds to the Mall or any other Drop Site location, or making a financial contribution.
The event will feature music from local musicians and performances from various groups. Entertainment will include praise dance presentations, children’s activities, R&B, blues, jazz, gospel, contemporary and much more. Other participants include Newport News Sheriff’s Department (finger printing). All performers and exhibitors are generously donating their time or talents.

The “Food Drive” is designed to benefit disadvantaged families. Any surplus items will be donated to Food Ministries or Pantries that offer assistance to citizens in the North District.
Food Distribution will take place on Tuesday, December 18th at the American Legion Post 368 from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. Deserving families will have an opportunity to select items of their choice from available donations.
In 2006, more than 300 families or individuals signed up to receive food. “Most families who benefited from our efforts over the past five years include the working poor, the unemployed and persons who are on a fixed income,” Councilwoman Scott said. “These families were having difficultly making ends meet all year long. Tax deductible monetary donations should be made payable to North District Food Drive/OHA, C/O Councilwoman Sharon P. Scott, P O Box 14174, Newport News, VA 23608.
