Global Family Day Prayer Breakfast
Saturday, January 5th the Second Annual Global Family Day Prayer Breakfast was held at The Edmonds Center in Portsmouth, Va. It was presented by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Life Institute with the theme “One Day of Peace and Sharing.”
The masters of ceremonies for the breakfast celebration were Dr. Alfred McQueen and Attorney William A. Smith. Mr. RaeVaughan Johnson gave the First Speech Reenactment, “Double Anointed.”
Bishop Anthony E. Moses, National Chaplain of The King Family Life institute, gave the invocation followed by Mr. Robert Johnson’s solo “Double Anointed.” Attorney William A. Smith, Assistant Teacher, Doing the World Bible Study, read the Scripture from I John 4. The food was blessed by Mr. Leonard Eugene Wyche, Registered Agent. of the King Institute.

After a delicious breakfast, Ms. Tyishua Brown rendered a solo followed by greetings from Dr. Latonya Wyche Ricks, Executive Director of the King Institute. St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church Praise Dancers pleased the audience with their rendition. Members of the Dreamkeepers Academy Avante Garde Troop was outstanding with the Second Speech Reenactment.
The speaker for the breakfast was the Honorable Walter E. Fauntroy of Washington, D.C., pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church and a U.S. Congressman. He challenged the audience to stay involved while presenting issues that would be of concern for all Americans and especially Afro Americans. He was introduced by Attorney William A. Smith.
Rev. Dr. Charles Beamon rendered a special prayer for families, and Dr. Karla Deneed Potts presented a monetary gift to the Special Family of Honor, and Dr. Milton A. Reid., Founder and Senior Chairman of the Board, presented the National Family of the Year.
Among individuals who were recognized during the celebration was Mrs. JohnAnn Perry, a long time member of the King Family Life Institute. Mrs. Perry was named Honorary Board Member in recognition of her outstanding service to the organization. She is also a retired Recreation worker for the City of Norfolk.
