Ichesar Neteru lights the candles commemorating the seven days of Kwanzaa during a celebration at the Norfolk Attucks Theatre last week. Kwanzaa is an African American celebration that is gaining in popularity as a way to encourage cultural pride and community. The Suwabi African Ballet presented its 11th annual Kwanzaa concert on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at the historic Attucks Theater in downtown Norfolk. Directed and choreographed by Suwabi Artistic Director Ofosuwa M. Abiola-Tamba, the performance showcased African dance with live drumming, reciting of the Nguzo Saba (7 principles) by Suwabi youth, the traditional candle lighting ceremony, Capoeira (African martial arts), libation, performances by guest artists, and an African market. The program wa free and open to the public.
